THE ROLE OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING IN OBVIATING SUICIDE IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of guidance in obviating suicide in public universities in Edo state south south senatorial district; a case study of the university of Benin. students in University of Benin, faculty of Education. The population of the study comprises of 13,000 students in the eight (8) Departments in Faculty of Education. The sample for the study consists of one hundred and sixty (160) students drawn from four (4) departments in Faculty of Education. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the departments from the eight departments in Faculty of Education. The sample size for students is 18% of the entire population. Proportionate sampling technique was used to select the participants in various department in the faculty of education. The research instrument for the study was a Questionnaire titled: “The Role Of Guidance And Counselling In Obviating Suicide In Public Universities” (TRGACOSIPU) which was distributed to the respondents and collected immediately after completion from respondents. The simple percentage and mean score was used in computing the responses of the questionnaire items. The findings of the study revealed that Suicide remains a significant and pressing issue among public university students. Despite the noted improvements, several indicators point to a high prevalence of suicide, suggesting that many students are still struggling with severe mental health challenges.
