THE ROLE OF DIGITAL LITERACY IN PROMOTING ADULT EDUCATION AMONG LEARNERS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated role of adult educational programmes in promoting digital literacy among adult learners in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Benin City, Edo State. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the study. The population for the study comprises adult learners situated within the Ovia North East LGA, of Benin city, Edo State. The sample for this study will consist of 150 adult learners in Learning centres situated within the Ovia North East LGA, of Benin City, Edo State selected from the population using a simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as one of the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by three adult facilitators from the Faculty of Education. A test-retest reliability was used to establish the reliability of the instrument. The interpretation of research questions was done based on percentage. Here all mean scores of 2.50 and above were considered positive and accepted as the basis for a confirmation of any research question and below 2.50 indicated a rejection and was considered negative. The study found that Literacy programmes, vocational training programmes, agriculture and health education programmes are the adult education programmes available in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state, Devices like computers, tablets and smartphones, online learning platforms, and educational resources are the tools used to teach adults practical skills like Microsoft Office, Google docs, and E-mails. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others: The scope of the skills available in the literacy centres should be broadened to accommodate a variety that can cater for the needs and interest of adult learners These factors have the power to sustain participation of adult learners, Computers, laptops, ipads and other mobile devices should be made accessible to all adult facilitators and adult learners in adult education through subsidies and loan facilities amongst others.
