ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “the role of Adult education in reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development in Ovia local government area in Edo state. Four research questions were raised. The study adopted the Simple random sampling techniques. The population of this study consist of one Hundred and Fifty (150) adult learners selected from adult literacy centres in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state.
The instrument for the study was the questionnaire which was designed based on the research questions raised. The face validity approach was adopted to determine the validity of the instrument and a test-retest method was used to find out the reliability of the research instrument which produced a reliability coefficient of 0.68. In analyzing the data, the descriptive statistics was employed comprising of frequency count, simple percentage and mean analyses. Findings from the study revealed that there are a lot of adult education programmes that exist in the local government area which helps in alleviation of poverty. It also revealed that some strategies such as encouraging literacy teaching among the adults populace. Pedagogical approach is used in adult education programme, inclusion of ICT in the training of Adults and also, promoting cultural heritage within the adult populace where adopted to in education programme to achieve sustainable development.
The findings also revealed that roles of adult education programmes in achieving sustainable development such as literacy training, vocational skill training for adults, political education among adult learners. Lastly there are various problems of adult education programmes in combating poverty and achieving sustainable development in the local government area. In view of the findings of this study, it was recommended that coordinator or manager of adult education centres should see to advocating for more staff, also the government should focus on financing.
