THE REPRESENTATION OF GENDER EQUALITY IN NOLLYWOOD MOVIES

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at investigating the Representation of Gender Equality in Nollywood Movies . Utilizing survey research methodology, data was collected from 220 respondents via questionnaires. The findings reveal a complex landscape: while a substantial percentage of Nollywood movies are perceived to depict gender equality at high or very high levels, there exists some uncertainty and ambiguity among respondents regarding the level of representation in certain films. The portrayal of gender roles in these movies is multifaceted, with variations in emphasis on traits such as loving, caring, and docile. Furthermore, there is a strong recognition among respondents of the importance of gender equality representation in Nollywood for shaping societal attitudes, with an overwhelming majority considering it crucial. The study also highlights the influential role of filmmakers in shaping gender equality portrayals, emphasizing the need for them to be mindful of their impact on societal perceptions. In conclusion, the findings underscore the significance of Nollywood in influencing societal norms and perceptions related to gender equality, highlighting the importance of continued exploration and awareness in this area. The recommendations emerging from the research suggest several key actions for the industry. Collaboration with gender experts, advocacy groups, and the implementation of educational initiatives can enhance awareness and inclusivity. Additionally, establishing clear policies, guidelines, and conducting regular research and monitoring are recommended to ensure accountability and progress in promoting gender equality in Nollywood films. By addressing these recommendations, the Nollywood industry can contribute positively to the advancement of gender equality both within the industry and in society at large.
