ABSTRACT
Traditional rulers have played significant roles in Nigeria’s governance since precolonial times. Despite the evolution of modern democratic institutions, traditional institutions continue to wield influence and relevance in contemporary governance. The study was conducted to determine the relevance of traditional rulers in contemporary in contemporary Nigeria governance using the Oba of Benin as a case study. This research explores the multifaceted roles of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s current political landscape, examining their impact on local administration, conflict resolution, and community development. In am attempt to understand this discourse, relevant literatures were reviewed and the theoretical framework adopted was the structural-functionalism theory. The sample size comprised of four hundred residents of Benin and they were selected using the simple random sampling technique. The data for the study was collected with the use of questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into four sections. The first section gathered information about the respondents while the other three help to answer the research questions. Through qualitative analysis, it is evident that traditional rulers navigate their roles amidst democratic governance structures and assesses their effectiveness in complementing formal governance systems. The findings contribute to understanding the dynamics of governance in Nigeria and provide insights into the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in shaping the country’s socio-political landscape. One of the recommendations made was that the government should provide training and capacity building programs for traditional rulers.
