THE RELEVANCE OF SEX EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOL: A CASE STUDY OF OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

   The research investigated the relevance of sex education in secondary schools: a case study of Oredo Local Government Area. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, questionnaires were used to collect data from the respondents. A total of one hundred (100) copies of questionnaires were administered to the respondents. The sample of this study comprised five public secondary schools with one hundred (100) teachers. However, only ninety-two out of one hundred (100) copies of the questionnaire were dully filled and returned. The data collected was analyzed using percentages to provide answers to the research questions the study postulated.

       The results were presented in a tabular form for each research question. The bench mark of now relevant was 0-45%, while the relevance was 50-100%. From the result of the findings, the following were made:

• The teaching of the relevance of sex education should be added to the school curriculum as it would broaden the mental horizon of the student.
• Teachers should know the immense importance of teaching students the relevance of sex education and the interest of the students should be considered during the process.
• Sex education should be on the task ahead to be taught by teachers using a variety of teaching methods.
• Finally, parents and guardians should provide all necessary assistant and encouragement to their children.
