The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between leadership style of principals and job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area Edo State. The idea was to identify leadership styles of principals and the effect of those styles on the job satisfaction level of secondary school teachers. The rationale for the study was simply an observation that some secondary school principals seem better in their leadership styles, while others are not. This seemed to have a great impact on teacher’s job satisfaction level. Data was collected using a questionnaire that was randomly distributed to public schools drawn from Ovia South West Local Government Area Edo State. Related literatures were reviewed. A total sample of eighty (80) principals and teachers from selected from six (6) schools in the LGA based on Random Sampling Technique. All the schools are public secondary schools owned by the state Government. The statistical survey research method was employed
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised few teachers from SS 1 - SS3 in Ovia South West as at the period of the study. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Its reliability was established at 0.7 using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected for the study was analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentages. The major findings of this investigation were that, there is no significant relationship between the principals leadership style and job satisfaction of teachers in secondary schools. The study was concluded with findings, recommendations and suggestions for further studies.
It was recommended amongst others that; Principals should ensure a conducive school climate that facilitates effective teaching and learning and 2.Principals should always endeavor to maintain a cordial relationship with their teachers as this enhances the teachers, psychologically and puts them in the right mood for work. The principals should also be of assistance, where necessary.
