ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to examine the problems of teaching poetry in English and literature in selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, five research questions were raised to guide the study. Are there problems associated with teaching and learning of poetry in English and literature classes in secondary schools? Does the teachers’ method of teaching contribute to the problem of teaching and learning of poetry in English and literature in secondary schools? Does teachers’ attitude contribute to the problem of teaching poetry? Does students’ attitude contribute to the problem of teaching poetry?
The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprised of senior secondary schools’ students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of two hundred (200) students were randomly selected from the population. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collated was analyzed using the frequency table and simple percentages.
The findings from the study revealed that the teachers poor planning is one of the problems of teaching and learning poetry. It is seen that poor teaching method of teaching contributes to the problem of teaching and learning of poetry in English and literature classes. It is seen that the negative attitude of teachers to teaching and learning of poetry contribute to the problem of teaching the subject. Further it recommends that The English teachers should use a combination of all teaching method of teaching when teaching poetry. Government and policy makers should be teaching of poetry in Literature-in-English compulsory at the secondary school level.
