ABSTRACT
The paper examined the adversities and obstacles in learning English as a second language in Nigeria; a case study of some university of Benin students. Employing convenience sampling technique, 150 respondents were selected randomly to represent the sample. The data collected were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentages.
The study revealed that teacher skills, practices and abilities could be reasons for the lack of necessary and expected progress in learning. The study also revealed that mother tongue hinders effective communication among the students and that there are no sufficient language laboratories for learning English language.
The study recommended intensive workshops and trainings to be carried out frequently in order to upgrade students in the leaning of English language and that teaching facilities be upgraded up to meet modern demands of school education. As this will help in leaning and knowledge acquisition.
