ABSTRACT
The present study entailed an analysis of football idiomatic expression use by student of Uniben. The research area was the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. The aim and objective of the study is to provide a vivid analysis of football idioms at the undergraduate level, for better understanding of this idioms, using Uniben students as a case study.
The motivation for this work as far as I know, has few predecessors. Such as language use in football July (2012) and football slangs august (2014), but not one of them focus on football idioms that why the pragmatics of football idioms use by students. The data employed for the research were playing soccer on the field, training and match situation. The instrument used by the researcher to gather the data were a tape recorder and writing materials. The theoretical framework employed is the ethnography of communication, Hymes (1974) while the translation approach is the figurative translation in performative translatology, Uwajeh (1994). The work falls under documentary and descriptive linguistics. The findings of the study revealed that these football idiomatic expressions are used by footballer to communicate to each other. The figures that are used entail the use of things on the field and off the field. The study therefore looked at some of the common use of football idiomatic expression use by student in an academic discourse and also showed their free translations.
