ABSTRACT
The political setup of Oyo was a very effective and unique one with the traditional institution playing their specific role in a highly developed structure of checks and balances, separation of power e.t.c. The political structure of Oyo empire did not only affects the lives of the people politically, it as encompasses the social, economy, trade relation, cultural and their inter tribal relation. It will suffice to say that the political structure also contributed to the civil wars which took place in the empire which eventually led to its fall.
As stated in the previous chapters, old Oyo Empire practiced a monarchial system of government and also adopted other principles of government like checks and balances, separation of power which ensures the sustainability of the empire before its fall in the late 19th century. Just like there are two sides of a coin, the political structure of Oyo Empire on one hand was advantageous to the people of Oyo and on the other hand had some negative consequences.
