ABSTRACT

The poetic nature of Igbo proverbs has not received deserved attention. Previous efforts have concentrated on their meaning and stylistic features. This has left critical gap in scholarship. This essay attempts to fill the existing void by paying attention to ways in which Igbo proverbs exhibit the nature of poetry. Textual analytic method is used to read the poems while relying on formalism to conduct the interpretation. The study concludes that Igbo proverbs contain poetic elements which the users employ to enrich their conversation, convey clear messages and even entertain their audience. The poetic elements include figurative language, imagery and symbols.
