ABSTRACT

This aim of this study was to examine the personality of the leader in relation to the foreign policy of a state using General Yakubu Gowon as a case study. This research intended to examine the link between the foreign policy of a state and the personality of the leader. It analyzed the foreign policy of Nigeria under the rule of General Yakubu Gowon and how his personality, leadership style, values and perception of different situations was able to influence the state’s foreign policy. The study also gave a biographical profile on the man, Yakubu Gowon analyzing his family, their life style, his early life, career options and choices and how these factors influenced his personality. The study also took into analysis the domestic and foreign policy plans of Yakubu Gowon and his influence in the various policy decisions. For instance, his stance on the unification of Nigeria. Also, his non-alignment posture and the liberation of all African States.
