ABSTRACT
This study was to investigate the perceived impact of divorce on the academic performance of students in the University of Benin. To guide the study, five research questions were raised which are outlined.
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of students in the Faculty of Education in the University of Benin. The sample for the study consists of three hundred (300) students drawn from the various departments in the Faculty of Education. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents in the Faculty of Education. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “The Percieved Impact of divorce on the academic performance of undergraduate students in the university of Benin." The Questionnaire was closed ended likert-type technique that expressed degree of agreement or disagreement with the supplied statement. It was validated by the researchers' supervisor and two experts. The data collected for the study was analyzed using frequency tables, Mean and Standard deviation.
The findings from the study sheds light on the intricate relationships between familial dynamics and the holistic development of children, emphasizing the need for tailored support and intervention strategies for students for navigating the aftermath of divorce. The research also showed that misunderstanding between husband and wife could lead to divorce. Also, some recommendations were given which could help in reducing the impact of divorce on students.
