THE PERCEPTION OF UNDERGRADUATES TOWARDS ADULT EDUCATION AS A COURSE OF STUDY IN UNIBEN

ABSTRACT

The study investigates the The perception of undergraduates towards adult education as a course of study in UNIBEN

A  total of one hundred (100) undergraduates from different faculties of the University of Benin, selected from the population using a simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection techniques such as tables, frequencies counts,mean  and standard deviation.

Findings of the study revealed that UNIBEN undergraduate students are unaware of adult education as a distinct field of academic study offered by the university, it was revealed that  there is a low level of understanding among UNIBEN undergraduates regarding the theoretical foundations of adult education, specifically the principles of andragogy (adult learning) compared to traditional pedagogy. It was also revealed that the perceived value and relevance of adult education is influenced by the perceived career opportunities or benefits of studying the field. It was recommended .It was recommended that UNIBEN management increase visibility through promotional materials such as posters, banners, and emails,  encourage faculty members to inform students about the Adult Education program during class time or through course materials,  incorporate Adult Education-related courses into the general curriculum,  create an online presence for the Adult Education program through a dedicated website or social media channels and to organize events or lectures on Adult Education to increase student awareness and interest
