ABSTRACT

Culture and worldview are the key elements that informs the philosophy of a people; the Igbos are no different. There are many traditional philosophical concepts akin to the Igbos which aid the understanding of the Igbo person, the concept of Chi is one of such concepts. Chi is the foundation of the intellectual system of Igbo thought and plays a vital role in shaping the life of an Igbo man. In a bid acquaint readers with sufficient knowledge of Chi, this study explores this concept in its various forms: Chi as giver of fortune and as personal god, Chi as a creator and a living being and the role it plays in the individual’s search for self-actualization. In order to provide adequate knowledge of this key concept in Igbo traditional thought, this study employs a qualitative research method coupled with the gathering of information from sages. Furthermore, this study recommends that concepts like Chi must be taught through inter-generational communication as a means of preserving our tradition and solving the identity crisis that has plagued our people since colonization and decolonization. Also, historians must undertake the arduous task of searching for the fundamental element of this concept and documenting to retain its originality.
