SUMMARY
This study examined the origin of Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East region of Nigeria as well as measures taken by the Nigerian government to suppress the insurgency. Boko Haram’s ideology is based on fundamentalist Sunni Islam, and their intent is to institute Sharia, or Islamic law in Nigeria and rid the country of any Western influence. Insurgency is caused by religious motivation, proliferation of weapons of war, corruption, unemployment, poverty, weak institutional structure, ethnicity and social frustration and the acts of insurgency has led to an epileptic economy, loss of lives and property.
