ABSTRACT

This is a research intothe morphology of lexical categories of the Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE). The corpus-based research was used to identify the structure of nouns and verbs and their derivational process. The data described and analysed in this work reveal and reflect the linguistic background of Nigerians and how they contribute to the lexicon of NP. From the analysis of this research work, several findings were gotten: the verbs in NP do not inflect to show tense; tenses are marked with the morpheme ‘bin’ to describe an event that has happened in the past that is no longer valid. Plural formation is derived by the placement of an independent particle ‘dem’ and on few occasions, are marked with ‘-s’. With these findings, it was concluded that NP is an autonomous language and not a dialect of the English language.
