ABSRACT
Sport is a very prominent social institution in almost every society. The functional perspective of sport is study with additional discussion on how it relates to linguistics. This research examines Morpho-Semantic aspects of Sport Jargon (Tennis Language). The language used has linguistic features which have been found from a descriptive study, the game of tennis forms the context situation. It focused on selective examples, which seeks to explain the language of the sport Tennis and also the relationship between Tennis and linguistics. Work done on this research is centred on the Morpho-semantics Analysis of Tennis Language. The data adopted two theories, word formation (derivational morphology) and the contextual theory of meaning. Word formation (Derivational Morphology) it involves the creation of one lexeme from another or the creation of a new words which are built by manipulating the existing words. These words are formed by some processes which are affixation (Prefix and suffixes), Borrowing, Compounding, Blending, Acronyms, Abbreviation, Clipping Etc. The contextual theory of meaning worked on how some terms in the tennis language are different from meaning in Standard English Context. The formation of words and meaning of words in tennis terms are slightly different from that of Standard English. The data garnered for the study were elicited with the use of the direct and indirect methods of data collection. The direct method (primarily method) was carried out in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. In this work some interesting features have been discovered, however, from my analysis it is concluded that the language of Tennis is a variety of language which is neither associated with groups nor individuals but with occasions and context where they are used and proof that Tennis jargon is distinct in itself.
