ABSTRACT
Five (5) marble samples were obtained for the study with the aim of identifying the chemical composition, mineralogical characteristics, and geological origins of the marble. The samples were subjectedto X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence analysis. The result of the mineralogical and geochemical analysis revealed the presence and ranges of Calcite (51-78%), Quartz (5-26%), Muscovite (7.0-11.6%), Orthoclase (2.0-5.9%), Albite (1.0-19.0%), Lime (84.69-92.79wt%), Al2O3 (2.14-2.69wt%), SiO2 (0.66-2.99wt%), MgO (0.54-9.70wt%), K2O (0.03-0.65wt%) Na2O and P2O5 are not present in the samples. The geochemical data of marble in Ubo indicates that it is highly calcitic (CaO) with low dolomite (MgO) content in the results.The low total alkali content values in the samples of marble from the study area implies that a shallow, very saline environment must have existed before metamorphism to marble. The marble low silica value and high CaO value make them poor raw materials for making cement. They are however appropriate for making pesticides and lining soil, though as determined by the Lime saturation factor.
