The microbiological quality of some locally produced drink

ABSTRACT

Six microbial isolates including five species of bacteria and three species of fungi were isolated from the Kunu samples. The bacterial isolates include Staphylococcus sp., proteus sp., Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas sp., while the fungal isolates were the species of Aspergillus, Penicillium and yeast. Colony counts of bacteria isolated from fresh kunu samples are presented (Figure 1). The count ranged from (6.02 to 5.79) Log10cfu/ml for total coliform count and (5.89 to 5.60) Log10cfu/ml. Tables 1 shows the cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics of the isolates identified in this study. The pH value of Kunu was shown to be 5.13 and 5.2 for the two sampled locations and the pH of Zobo was 5.4 and 5.5 for the two locations. This is similar with values obtained by (Amusa. and Ashaye, 2009). Which showed the pH value of Zobo to be 5.26 to 5.65 and Kunu to 6.02 to 6.30.
