THE MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF FISH FEED AND THE PERCENTAGE OF MICROBIAL QUANTITIES

ABSTRACT

Nowadays a big problem facing the humankind is food production because food is one of the preconditions for survival. From the aspect of food security, fishing sector is very important economic part of the food industry. Fish feed low quality is a direct result of non-balanced composition of the ingredients and poor microbiological status. For example, on the quality of fish meat influences have: feed chemical composition and different percentage of proteins. microbiological composition of the fish feed has a big influence on the weight gain and fish health condition. The study was aimed to evaluate the microbiological analysis of fish feed and the percentage of microbial quantities does not exceed the accepted standard. Serial dilutions were made by suspending 1g of each sample in 10ml of sterile water. 1ml of 1 of 10-3 and 10-5 were used to inoculate culture plates. The fungi isolated were identified using cultural and morphological characteristics of the colony and microscopic examination. From the results, the mean fungi count on PDA ranged from 0.01x106 cfu/g to 1.82x106 cfu/g for 10-3 dilution factor and 1x106 cfu/g to 24.5x106 cfu/g for 10-5 dilution factor. The microorganisms isolated were Shigella spp, Klebsiella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Morganella morganii, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, Salmonella, Proteus vulgaris and Citrobacter. The bacteria count of fish feed obtained from fishponds in Egor and Oredo LGA in Benin metropolis showed that Fish feed from Egor had a higher bacteria count of 52x102 cfu/ml while Egor had a less amount of 45x102cfu/ml. Coliform bacteria count shown in figure 4.2 revealed 2 that Egor had a coliform bacteria count with 3.25x102cfu/ml while Oredo was totally free from coliform. This study also showed that feed ingredients are important vehicles for contaminating finished fish feed as they may be heavily contaminated by Mucor, Penicillin, A. flavus and Fusarium. Feed manufacturers should monitor feeds routinely, and appropriate mycotoxin absorbents should be selected to reduce mycotoxin contamination in feed ingredients and finished feed.
