ABSTRACT

This work Language of Propaganda: A case study of Nigeria political campaign seeks to focus on the role language in influencing people’s decision towards an election as to whom they would vote for.

This work considers the influence of propaganda on the electorate on the election making use of some linguistic devices: Repetition, Word coinages, Exaggeration, Attacks on party logo and slogan, Vagueness, Abusive expression etc.

Propaganda over the years has been the combatant way of deliberately distorting facts in order to influence people to change their line of thought or to blindly maintain their line of thought. Language on the other hand is a tool or means of communication which intention is achieved because without communicating it, it has achieved its desired effect.

Finally, the researcher here focuses on the language used to win people’s favour in a General election with focus on Nigeria general election and to make necessary recommendations upon completion of the research.
