ABSTRACT

This study focuses exclusively on female students at the University of Benin. It assesses their knowledge, awareness, and attitudes regarding cervical cancer screening Cervical cancer is a preventable and treatable disease, yet it continues to be a significant global health challenge. Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. Many female students lack basic awareness of cervical cancer, including its causes, risk factors, and preventive measures This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on cervical cancer screening awareness among university students in Nigeria. Second, it sheds light on the factors influencing knowledge, which can inform targeted educational interventions For the purpose of collecting reliable information, the use of questionnaires was administered as an instrument for data collection. The questionnaire consists of two sections After the collection and proper sorting of valid questionnaires, the data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, mean and simple percentage. The University of Benin should implement comprehensive educational programs aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge of cervical cancer and cervical cancer screening among female students Collaborate with healthcare professionals or organizations to provide free or low-cost cervical cancer screenings on campus. This can help to remove barriers to access and encourage more students to get screened. Peer education programs should be developed where knowledgeable students can educate their peers about cervical cancer and the importance of screening. Peer-to-peer interactions can be effective in conveying information and reducing stigma.
