SUMMARY
In Africa and all over the world, women have proved themselves as worthy elements of change. They have shown to be of tremendous importance and their influence cannot be negated in the society. This research has shown that the significance of women in the evolution of the socio-political culture in their societies is not a recent phenomenon. This is because, women in pre-colonial Africa showed strength, had leadership qualities and were very much involved in the building of their societies. Generally, the belief is that women had very submissive political positions in most of the African societies. This has led to the cry from feminists and other women advocates who cry out against the patriarchal system which existed in most societies. Whilst it is true that patriarchy did exist in Africa, it is very important to note that women were not entirely removed from political positions and positions of influence. According to P.I. Omoregie, though men dominated politics in pre-colonial Africa, there were some women who played significant roles in the politics and government of their societies.
