THE INVESTIGATION OF THE LANGUAGE ATTITUDES OF EDO PEOPLE TOWARDS THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This study looks into the investigation of the attitudes of the Edo people towards their native language, Edo. Based on the richness and historical significance of the Edo language, there exists varying perceptions, views and attitudes about the language by its people hence the study. Through a mixedmethod approach, the researcher seeks to assess the attitudes of Edo people towards the Edo language and understand the factors that influence these attitudes. It also seeks to explore the impact of attitudes towards the Edo language on language use within the Edo community, analyze the implications of these attitudes for the preservation of the Edo language while providing recommendations for language revitalization and preservation strategies based on findings from the research. This study relies on primary data which entails a combination of qualitative and quantitative data allowing for a comprehensive understanding of attitudes, beliefs and behaviors related to the Edo language. Quantitative data from questionnaires will be analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques to unveil patterns among different demographic groups, while qualitative data from interviews and observational method will provide deeper insights into the opinions and experiences of the Edo people regarding their native language. The theoretical framework used is The Communication Accommodation Theory by Giles. Anticipated findings suggest that attitudes towards the Edo language may be influenced by factors like exposure to other languages, educational policies and level as well as societal perceptions. This study stands to reveal potential shifts in language attitude overtime, particularly significant amongst younger generation due to globalization, modernization and urbanization. The implications of this research extend to language policy, education and cultural preservation initiatives within the Edo community as part of language revitalization efforts. Overall, this study contributes to the broader discourse on language attitudes and revitalization in the Edo community while advocating for language preservation and cultural sustainability in the region.
