ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “the influence of stress on the academic performance of undergraduates in public university in Edo state.” Three research questions were raised; What are the common causes of stress for undergraduates. What are the types of stress commonly faced by undergraduates. What is the relationship between stress and the academic performance of undergraduates. The target population of the study will consist of two hundred and eighty (107) 400 level Business Education students in university of Benin, Edo state. The sample size adopted for this study is a total of 100 Business Education. The purposive sampling will be used to select all the population for the study. Findings from the study revealed that; Stress has a significant negative impact on academic performance. The study found that 40% of students agree that stress contributes to poor academic performance. High levels of stress can lead to decreased motivation to succeed academically. The study found that 48% of students agree that high levels of stress negatively impact their motivation to succeed academically. The following recommendations are made; There should be a comprehensive counseling service provided by the university to cater to the emotional and psychological needs of students. This service should include regular sessions, workshops, and support groups to help students manage stress and anxiety. There should be a flexible academic calendar and timetable to reduce the workload and stress levels of students. This can include allowing students to choose their own exam dates, providing additional time for assignments, and reducing the frequency of exams.
