ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of sports participation on the self-esteem and body image among female undergraduates. A case study of female undergraduates in the University of Benin, Benin City. A descriptive survey research design was employed.
Five (5) research questions were formulated to ellict responses from female undergraduates in this study. One hundred (100) questionnaires made of 25 items were administered to the respondents. The data was collected with questionnaires and analyzed statistically using the simple percentage (%). The statistical result proved all the research questions positively true as majority responded positively to the carefully drawn questionnaire.
Findings of the Study revealed that different sports activities has an impact on self-esteem and body image, regular sports participation plays a positive role on self-esteem. It also revealed that there's a difference in self-esteem and body image between sports and non-sports participants. Societal and cultural factors influences the relationship between sports participation, self-esteem and body image.
It was recommended that females should be encouraged to participate in sports and given support, highlighting the benefits of sports participation on self-esteem and body image.
