ABSTRACT
The topic the influence of social media on protest in Nigeria is an idea that is brought under the tenet of the growing rate of protest and the change and influence social media has on protest or protest movement ever since the advent of online space created to allow people to share their view and debate amongst themselves about issues relating to leadership. Also, the social and developmental imbalance in the Nigeria economy.
This study is anchored on the tenets of technology determinism and theories, investigated the influence of social media on protest movement in Nigeria. This study became necessary when there were assumptions that social media has not changed anything regarding protest in Nigeria and that it has no positive influence on protesters and student in Nigeria. Hence it became imperative to ascertain the influence social media on protest movement in Nigeria. The objective of this study is to identify some of the causes of protest in Nigeria, bring out the effectiveness of social media on protest movement in Nigeria amongst other important objective the study aims to achieve. Using the survey design, 9 item questioner was employed to elicit data from the 250 student randomly selected from the faculty of Art, Ekehuan campus University of Benin. This sample represented 80% of the population of Ekehuan in the University of Benin. Sample percentage and sample table were used to present and analyses the data generated. Finding shows that student use social media to very high extent and it has influenced them to be actively involved in protest movement in Nigeria. They are constrained by factors of the spread of fake news and the cost of internet connection in the country. The study concluded that social media remains indispensable on protest movement in Nigeria has it helps in dissemination of information faster and easier and has also helped students and protester to be more active and involved in the process. Thus, it is recommended that social media should be fully utilized by protesters in enhancing and promoting a fast and effective protest process.
