ABSTRACT
Education serves as a cornerstone of societal development, significantly influencing the future of individuals and communities. In the context of public secondary schools in the Ovia North East area of Edo State, Nigeria, this study delves into the complex relationship between school resources, extracurricular activities, and academic performance. Through a descriptive survey research design, data was collected from teachers in 10 randomly selected public secondary schools. The research instrument, a questionnaire titled "Investigation on the Influence of School Adequate and Quality Resource on Student Academic Performance (IISAQRSAPQ)," enabled respondents to provide insights into various aspects of educational resources and their impact on students' academic achievements. The findings of this study highlighted several critical insights. Firstly, the availability of manageable class sizes, sufficient funding, textbooks, instructional materials, and qualified teachers were recognized as pivotal factors contributing to improved student academic performance. Moreover, the quality of a school's physical infrastructure, encompassing up-to-date laboratories, well-appointed classrooms, and spaces dedicated to extracurricular activities, was identified as instrumental in shaping the learning environment and subsequently influencing academic success. Furthermore, respondents emphasized the positive correlation between students' participation in extracurricular activities, particularly sports and arts programs, and their physical health, creativity, and overall academic performance. Despite challenges, public secondary schools in the Ovia North East area generally reported satisfactory access to well-equipped laboratories, adequate classroom furniture, and functional libraries. This research underscores the multifaceted interplay between school resources, infrastructure, extracurricular engagement, and academic achievement. The conclusions drawn from this study offer valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and institutions striving to enhance the educational landscape and promote student success. To this end, we recommend investments in school resources, infrastructure enhancements, promotion of extracurricular activities, and addressing space constraints to optimize the educational experience. Furthermore, we advocate for future research endeavors that explore additional factors influencing academic performance and consider the perspectives of teachers, parents, and school administrators, thus providing a comprehensive understanding of the educational dynamics within the region.
