ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of poor reading habits on academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo Local Government area of Edo State.  Six research questions were raised to guide the study. A total sample of 90 respondents selected through a purposive random sampling technique was used for the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The data for the study were collected through a Questionnaire titled: influence of poor reading habits on academic performance (IPRHAPQ).

The data collected were analysed using percentage analysis. From the study, It was found that poor reading habit is one of the causes of poor academic performance among secondary school students, improper reading habit and lack of understanding of one’s reading culture affect academic performance of students, inability to develop good reading habit affect academic performance, laziness on the part of the students, inadequate planning contributes to students poor reading, lack of focus on goal achievement, students’ family background influence on their reading habit negatively, parent’s education background influences students reading habit negativity, teachers’ unfriendly attitude to students affect their reading habit, lack of encouragement of teachers result to students’ poor reading habits, inadequate reading materials and lack of access to the library facilities.

On the basis of the above findings, recommendations were made.
