ABSTRACT

This research work is titled "Influence of Information and Communication Technology on Teaching and Learning of History in Public Universities in Edo state. The major aim of this study is investigate the influence of ICT on teaching and learning of history. To support this study, five research questions were raised.

Subsequently, the review of literature was conducted under different subheadings in order to understand what had been done in the past on the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted, and the questionnaire which was validated and found reliable by experts was used to collect data. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage mean analysis.

The findings of this study revealed that by enhancing communication, computer improves the teaching and learning process by making it more interesting thus, promoting students' interest and motivation in the teaching and learning process. It was also revealed that interactive board helps teachers to diversify learning instructions to suit the differences in learner's needs. Similarly, teleconferencing offers students the opportunity to learn anywhere, including being able to learn directly from experts in the field through teleconferencing, and modifying  the classroom into a field trip which concretize the learning. In addition, findings showed that projector helps maximize the duration of the learning process which makes learning more effective. Some of the challenges facing the usage of technology in education as revealed in this study include inadequate power supply, lack of finance and poor attitude towards ICT gadgets among others. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended among others, that teachers of history should engage in intensive and extensive use of technology in teaching and learning of history,  that teachers should promote dialogue and collaboration among students to enable them learn on their own by sharing idea with others, while the teacher facilitates the process.
