ABSTRACT
This study was designed to assess the effect of socio-economic background on the academic performance of secondary school biology students in Egor Local Government Area. Four research questions were raised to guild the study. The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A total of one hundred (100) randomly selected secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area constituted the study sample. Questionnaire was used for the study. The reliability of the instruments were established at 0.73 using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and mean. The findings of the study revealed that; regarding parents as educational role model, assisting in planning reading timetable and school work influences students academic performance. Students communication with parent, neigbhours and others with native and English language influences students academic performances. The size of the family small family size enjoy more parental attention than those from large families, fewer children in the household, parents have more time to interact with them. A family with many kids receives less parental attention influences students performance. And provision of study materials influences students academic performance. It was recommended that; in order to have a number of children they can support financially, socially, and emotionally, parents should engage in family planning. Creating a comfortable and inspirational environment at home, with topic textbooks and other study materials, magazines, dictionaries, novels, radio, television, and other technological gadgets.
