Abstract

The Nigerian cinema industry and film are presently facing major structural revolution stirred by the use of new technologies in its production, distribution and exhibition approaches. This research explores how the advancements in digital technology are enhancing the aesthetics and narratives of movies in Nigeria in their quest to remain relevant in the global marketplace. This thesis discusses the key aspects of storytelling in a digital age by examining the processes and strategies of ‘new generation’ filmmakers in Nigeria and the developments ushered by digitalization. It also observed how digital exhibition is reviving the screening of Nigerian films in Multiplex Cinemas using digital projectors with encryption technology. New business models came alive eradicating distribution problems encountered by new entrants and erstwhile filmmakers. Also, the problems of mass dubbing that have plagued the industry for so many years, Nigerian owned digital online platforms such as IROKO TV, Ibaka TV and Afrinolly now provide economical and easy access to a vast global audience. This thesis adopting a qualitative methodology, using questionnaire method and interview for data collection.
