ABSTRACT
This study investigated the influence of creative writing workshops on students’ writing proficiency, focusing on five key areas: grammar and mechanics, vocabulary development, creativity, revision skills, and attitudes towards writing. A quasi-experimental design was adopted, targeting 45 senior secondary school students from New Era Secondary School. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire to address research questions on the impact of creative writing workshops on specific aspects of writing proficiency.
The findings revealed that participation in creative writing workshops significantly improved students’ grammar and mechanics, enhancing their ability to edit and refine their work. Students also demonstrated expanded vocabulary usage, greater creativity, and the ability to craft engaging narratives and poems. Additionally, workshops were found to strengthen revision and editing skills and foster positive attitudes toward writing, boosting student confidence and motivation.
Based on the findings, the study recommends integrating creative writing workshops into school curricula to improve writing proficiency and creativity. Training teachers to facilitate workshops effectively and providing adequate resources are also suggested to maximize the benefits of this approach.
