ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of aircrafts noise pollution on airport host communities: a case study on Benin airport, Edo State Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to determine the individual’s perception on the levels of noise pollution within the study area; to determine the effect of aircraft noise on the health of individuals within the study area; to determine the psychological effect of aircraft noise pollution on individuals within the study area; to determine the effect of aircraft noise pollution on buildings within the study area; and finally to determine the strategies that can be adopted to reduce the effect of aircraft noise pollution on individuals within the study area. Questionnaires were administered to a total of 200 respondents and the data collected was fed into the SPSS. Using the frequency table, pie chart and bar graph for the analysis of data and the interpretation of the result and the discussion of findings. From the study, it has been discovered that the level of aircraft noise pollution is apparent during landing and take off in the various period of the day (Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Night). The study population also affirmed the effect of aircraft noise pollution on building, health and psychology of individuals. The study recommend the following; the government should pay attention to the aircraft transportation system by provision of aircraft that generate low noise during takeoff and landing to reduce the high level of noise pollution; there should be regulation and control of the number of aircraft movement during morning and afternoon if possible; the government body should implement and encourage the planting of trees around houses as a law in building project; the use of quality housing material in starting and finishing a building project; the use of modern sound proof windows and doors in building; the use of ear plug primarily for the landing and take off of aircraft.
