THE IMPLICATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT.

ABSTRACT

This study examine the state of government’s interference in the financial affairs of the Local Government impedes rural development, evaluate the effect of the state government’s interference in law making and policy formulation process on rural development, ways in which corruption free and local government autonomy will enhance rural development. The population of the study Egor is a Local Government Area of Edo State, with a population of 258,442. Data generated from questionnaire will be analyzed using the simple percentages. The findings of the study revealed the effective of state government’s interference in law making and policy formulation process affect rural development which reveal that Authority to exercise some functions assigned to local governments are sanctioned by state of Assembly which limits their total control, Officials of Local Government are not given adequate freedom/liberty to make laws, formulate and execute policies based on what commonly affects the local government and her residents as a people. the following conclusions were drawn. One of the fundamental aims and objectives of the 1976 local government reforms is use of veritable vehicles for the transformation of community development projects in the rural areas through the provision of primary health care and other financial assistance for self-help projects, which can ultimately improve the people’s standard of living
