ABSTRACT
This study examined the implications of insecurity to sustainable development in Nigeria: A case study of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Specifically, the research was carried out to determine if there is any significant relationship between insecurity and socio-economic development in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, between implications of cyber criminality and socio-economic development of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and if there is no significant relationship between kidnapping and economic development of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Quantitative survey method was adopted as the research design. Population comprised of 525 000 people, this was the figure given to the researcher at the Oredo secretariat in Benin City. This is the entire population in Oredo Local Government area of Edo State as at the time the investigation was embarked upon. The sample for the study is 399, which was obtained through the application of Taro Yamane formula, but the researcher approximated it to the nearest whole number, therefore the sample size for this study is 400. Data was collected through administration of questionnaire to selected respondents. Data analysis of the research questions was done using the frequency count and percentages while the hypotheses were tested using multivariate regression analysis. The findings in this study revealed that there was a significant relationship between insecurity and socio-economic development in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. There is significant relationship between implications cyber criminality and socio-economic development of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and there is significant relationship between kidnapping and economic development of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Local government should have total autonomy; the kind of autonomy that most local governments in advanced democracies are known to possess. This will allow and guarantee their survival and provide it with remedies for the problems highlighted above. There are good prospects for Nigerian local government systems. These include: convenient grassroots governance; quick execution of projects without the bottlenecks often encountered in getting approval from the state; provision of essential services to the public by the local government councils; and awareness of the community’s responsiveness and participation.
