ABSTRACT
This study was aimed at examining the impediment of corruption on public service delivery system in Edo state Nigeria. Public or civil servants primarily exists to help implement government policies or help execute or fulfill government agendas, and the quality of public services provided is reliant on public servants. Recent trends have shown increased demands of public needs, and the success of any government administration is determined by its responsive nature to effectively meet public needs. The researcher relied on the primary and secondary sources of data to gather information where data was primarily obtained through the use of the questionnaire administered to over 100 civil servants in Benin Edo state, and the secondary sources of data was extracted via the use of internet, library, newspaper and journals. Drawing on this, a population of over 600 civil servants was drawn from level grade (1-17). Where a sample of 121 representing 20% of the population was taken to study how corruption affect public service delivery system. The study adopted a descriptive survey design while the instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire. The Likert four-point, scale rating was adopted whereas the data collected were analyzed using the chi square. The study revealed that corruption amidst public servants is one of the major causes for underdevelopment, poor management of governmental projects, the high cost of living, increased crime rate, and increased poverty rate. The result of the data analyzed shows that corruption highly impedes the public service delivery system in the civil service. Poor remuneration, lack of government intervention, lack of intergovernmental relationship among others was identified as not major causes of corruption in the public service.The researcher recommend that civil service should be granted absolute autonomy without interference from political leaders, government should provide adequate funding, government should provide a medium where civil servants can report corrupt practices, government should create additional anti-corruption agencies as measures to curb corruption in the civil service.
