ABSTRACT
The elevation of neutrophil and lymphocyte ratio is an indication for inflammation and other diseases. Over the years, the physiological roles of magnesium has been exploited in the treatment of cardiovascular related diseases. This study was carried out to investigate the impact of magnesium on neutrophil and lymphocyte level in serum. Sixteen (16) adult New Zealand rabbits of both sexes with average weight between 1.7-2.8kg were commercially obtained randomly grouped into two (2) groups. Group one was fed with normal rabbit pellets and water ad libitum. Group 2 was fed with normal rabbit pellets and high magnesium (4.8mM)/day for 16 weeks (Magnesium adapted rabbits). At the end of the 16th weeks, each group was divided into 2 sub-groups (N=4) control and test (myocardial infarction (MI) + oxidative stress (OS) induction). A single dose of adrenaline hydrochloride at a dose 1mg/kg/ SC was administered on two consecutive days with an interval of 24 hours between applications to induce myocardial Infarction. Oxidative stress was induce using carbon tetrachloride (CCL4) in the infarcted group in a single dose of 1ml/kg/bw by oral gavage on the 2nd day following myocardial infarction and animals were sacrificed by anesthesia after 24hr. From my study it was shown that there was no significant difference in neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in magnesium adapted rabbits (MAR) when compared with the control (NMAR). There was also a significant decrease in creatinine kinase for magnesium adapted rabbits (MAR) compare to the control group (NMAR). Troponin I decreased in MAR and even more in MAR induced with myocardial infarction and oxidative stress. The study also showed that SOD an antioxidant increase in MAR compare to the control group (NMAR) Therefore, magnesium adaptation activates neutrophil effect in myocardial infarction and offers protection against myocardial infarction and oxidative stress.
