Abstract
The traditional institutions have gone through good and bad times in the country’s political history right from the pre-colonial, through the colonial and even up till the post-colonial periods; and have not relented in their commitment to the democratic process. This study is to investigate the impact of traditional rulers in contemporary local government administration in Edo South senatorial district” it also explores and examine the structure of traditional rulership on local government administration in Edo South senatorial district; Ascertain whether the constitutional advisory roles of traditional rulers impact on rural development in Edo South senatorial district; and Investigate the challenges of traditional rulers in contemporary local government administration in Edo South senatorial district. The study adopted a quantitative research method with survey instruments deployed to gather data analysis. Findings revealed that traditional rulers were accorded with responsibilities during colonial rule, which result to rural development and that age-long traditional institution in Nigeria has changed and they are no longer respected. Based on these findings, it was recommended that a constitutional role be assigned to the traditional institutions not only because they are the closest to the grassroots but also because traditional chieftaincy institution is a permanent feature of Nigeria’s body polity.
