ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the impact of tiktok on the academic performance of students in Benin city. The instrument employed for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire with a reliability test of 0.87 which shows the genuineness of the instrument. The self-structured questionnaire was developed and administered to 200 undergraduate students from across the faculties in University of Benin, Edo State after validation of the instrument by two lecturers. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of simple percentage, mean, and standard deviation. This study explores the impact of TikTok on the academic performance of students in Benin City, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey design and questionnaires, the research aligns with prior studies on social media's influence on academic performance. The findings indicate that while TikTok may have a negative impact on a small portion of students in terms of exam performance, it generally remains neutral in affecting students' preparation for examinations. Additionally, TikTok emerges as a valuable educational tool, positively influencing students' academic performance. The majority of students use TikTok daily, emphasizing the need to consider social media's role in education and its potential benefits. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion on the impact of digital platforms on students' academic outcomes. x To enhance education in the digital age, this content suggests several key recommendations. Firstly, educational institutions and educators should consider integrating TikTok and similar social media platforms into their teaching methods, offering structured educational content to engage students and improve learning experiences, while establishing guidelines for responsible use. Secondly, the implementation of digital literacy programs is proposed to equip students with the necessary skills for effective and responsible use of social media for educational purposes, including source evaluation and time management. Additionally, educational institutions should create systems for monitoring and assessing the impact of social media on students' academic performance, allowing for timely intervention and support. Lastly, collaboration between parents, guardians, educators, and students is encouraged to promote responsible social media use, including setting limits on screen time and leveraging these platforms for educational benefits, ensuring a balanced approach.
