ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of incorporating History into the senior secondary school curriculum of Ovia North East local government, Edo State. The research aims to investigate the effects of History education on students' understanding of the present, cultural awareness, critical thinking, and national identity. Four research questions guided the study, which employed a random sample of 100 students. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, and analysis utilized simple percentage and frequency count. The findings reveal that the inclusion of History in the curriculum has a profound impact on students' development. Specifically, it enhances their understanding of the present by providing context and perspective on current events. History education also fosters cultural awareness and appreciation, promoting empathy, tolerance, and acceptance. Additionally, analyzing historical events and processes develops critical thinking, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, studying national history encourages students to understand their role in society, develop patriotism, and engage in civic activities. The study's findings highlight the significance of History education in shaping informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. The research recommends the continued inclusion of History in senior secondary school curricula to promote a more informed, tolerant, and cohesive society. By emphasizing the importance of History education, this study contributes to the ongoing conversation about the role of social sciences in shaping the next generation of leaders and citizens.
