THE IMPACT OF TEACHER’S TEACHING METHODS ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ECONOMICS

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of teacher’s teaching methods on students’ academic performance in Economics. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, which was developed and administered to 150 SS2 students from three selected secondary schools in Oredo local government area of Edo state. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics (mean). The result revealed that one of the most common methods observed in teaching economics is traditional lecture -based teaching. Teachers often use lectures to deliver content, explain economic theories and provide context for various economic concepts. It also revealed that economics teachers, frequently employ case studies to illustrate practical applications of economic theories, teaching methods that actively engage students, such as group discussions, debates and problem-solving activities often lead to improved academic performance. Furthermore, teaching methods that emphasize the practical relevance of economics through real-world examples, case studies and connecting lessons to current events show positive correlations with academic success. The study therefore recommended that teachers should actively include real-world economic examples and case studies in their curriculum to demonstrate the practical relevance of economic concepts, School managements should organize regular workshops, training sessions and seminars for economics teachers to keep them updated on effective teaching methods and strategies, School management should invest in technology resources and provide training to teachers to effectively integrate digital tools and resources into their economics lessons.
