ABSTRACTStress is a phenomenon which exists in every work of life. Teachers’ stress is significant because these are the set of workers who are generally referred to as nation builders. Their role in the society cannot be undermined. Public schools are the yardstick by which a country’s educational growth and development is measured. If the performances of public school teachers are negatively impacted upon by stress, it can create a huge set back in the production of manpower and human resources thereby affecting the growth and development of the country. The key question therefore is how to manage andcontrol the stress of the public school teachers in the Oredo local council for maximum performance. The population of the study is about three hundred and fifty six teachers (356) in public schools in Oredo local council, a total number of one hundred and sixtyfive (165) questionnaires were printed and distributed in ten (10) public schools in Oredo local council, on return, one hundred and forty two (142) questionnaires were filled and returned. Data was collected from primary source; analysis was done using descriptive statistics. The descriptive statistics used include frequency counts and percentage scores. Qualitative research approach was employed. The research findings indicated that: (1) Teachers in public schools in Oredo local council do experience stress in their workplace. (2) Teachers with high stress level perform below expectation. (3) That the lower the stress level, the higher the performance rate. (4) That there is a relationship between stress and performance, as factors that cause stress also affect performance. (5) The “jobstrain” model framework is the best way to analyze, identify and manage stress in order to avoid its negative impact on the teachers and their performance. (6) Identifying what causes stress is the first step to deal with stress. (7) Changes in lifestyle or other small strategies can help to deal with stress. (8) Eating healthy, balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables and finding humor in stressful situations, talking to friends or family and sharing thoughts and fears can fight stress.(9) Effective time management among the teachers is the main strategy towards coping with stress in the workplace.(10) Maintaining cordial relationship with colleagues, enjoying uninterrupted sound sleep up to seven or eight hours in a day, exercising the body regularly, as well as attending to problems as and when due are also strategies that should be adopted to cope with stress.
