ABSTRACT
This research project investigates the challenges faced by the elderly in rural communities, with a specific focus on the Uwelu community. It emphasizes the need for context-specific interventions that consider the unique socio-cultural and economic dynamics of rural communities. The study advocates for a holistic and integrated approach to social welfare, ensuring that these services are responsive to the evolving needs of the elderly. It provides evidence-based recommendations for enhancing social welfare programs, such as increasing funding for these initiatives and enhancing the delivery of social welfare programs.
Data for the research was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using tables and percentages. The demographic data of the respondents, which included gender, age, marital status, and religion, was also collected. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from the questionnaire with qualitative data from interviews and focus group discussions. This approach provided a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the elderly in the Uwelu community.
The research concludes with a call for more comprehensive strategies to augment the delivery of social welfare programs. These strategies could encompass increasing funding for these initiatives and enhancing the delivery of social welfare programs. The study suggests that policy makers should consider the specific needs and challenges of the elderly in rural communities when designing these strategies. It also highlights the importance of community involvement in the implementation of these strategies, ensuring that they are culturally sensitive and context-specific.
