ABSTRACT
This study examines and assess the impact of plastic waste pollution on the environment in Egor Local Government area, Edo State. The study obtained data from the residents and market sellers which formed the respondents of the questionnaire administered to the sample population in which 400 questionnaires were distributed to households and Urban market women and men. Interview guides were administered to waste managers covering the selected communities which includes Ugbowo, Uwelu, Uselu and Ogida and also to Edo State Waste Management Board. This study also employs spatial analysis to depict areas that have more plastic waste on the environment. The outcome of the analysis depicts that most households and market women are not oblivious of the negative impacts of plastic waste on the environment, however according to majority of respondents in the study area. Indiscriminate disposal is as a result of negligence and lackadaisical attitude of households and market women as well as government's inadequacies as regards proper waste management system.
Finally, recommendations were proffered that government should be actively involved in proper waste management system by supporting waste managers financially in carrying out their duties by providing loans and vehicles to help them carry out their job efficiently and effectively in order to reduce the spate of plastic waste on the environment. In addition, households and market traders should be sensitized on proper waste disposal.
