ABSTRACT
The study investigated the influence of parenting styles on the academic achievement of SS1 students in selected secondary school in Oredo local government area in Edo state . To achieve the purpose of the study, three research questions were raised and answered. The design of the study is descriptive survey and the population for the study comprised of 11,985 secondary school students in public schools in Oredo local government area in Edo state. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 respondents. The instrument that was used for the data collection is a structured questionnaire titled “The Influence of parenting style on the academic achievement of SS1 students in selected secondary school ( TIOPSOTAAOSSISSSQ) . The instruments were validated by experts. For the realibility of the instruments, the coefficient is 0.782, 0.962, 0.918 were obtained for Authoritative, Authoritarian, permissive and neglectful parenting style respectively . The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation to answer the research question while one sample ttest was used to test the hypothesis. The result showed that the predominant parenting style is authoritative followed by authoritarian, neglectful and permissive parenting style in SS1 in selected secondary school in Oredo local government area in Edo state. The study also revealed that there is a significant difference between parenting styles and the academic achievement of students in SS1 in selected secondary school in Oredo local government area in Edo state. It also showed that there is a significant difference between socio-economic background of parent's and their parenting styles. The study recommended the Developement and implementation of parenting programs that support and enhance authoritative parenting practices, such as positive reinforcement, open communication, and setting clear boundaries, to promote a conducive environment for academic excellence among SS1 students in Oredo local government area. It also recommended that School administrators and counselors should provide guidance and support to parents on how to adopt parenting practices that promote academic achievement, such as setting high expectations, encouraging hard work, and fostering a growth mindset, to help students reach their full academic potential. The study also recommended that Schools and local authorities should provide targeted support and resources to parents from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, such as parenting workshops, counseling services, and economic empowerment programs, to help them overcome the challenges that may hinder their ability to provide effective parenting.
