ABSTRACT
This study investigates the impact of natural disaster on the socio-economic life of Nigerians: A case study of Ndokwa East Local Government Area Of Delta State. the study adopted the survey design on the basis of which data was source from a sample of 100 respondents, using smple random sampling technique. The data was analyse using simple percentage and chi-square statistical technique. The result revealed that natural disaster have negative impact on the income and productivity at work in Ndokwa East Local Government in Delta State, also the result shows that natural disaster impact negatively on the health and wellbeing of victims in Ndokwa East Local Government in Delta State, consequently, natural disaster causes movement and displacement of individuals in Ndokwa East Local Government in Delta State, and natural disaster impact negatively on psychological wellbeing of the people in Ndokwa East Local Government in Delta State. The study recommends that given that floods are the most pervasive type of natural disaster in Nigeria, and are fairly predictable, ef orts can be made to prepare adequately and so reduce impacts from these events. Although floods can be ambiguous in their onset characteristics; general floods are slow-developing and fairly predictable, while others (like flash floods) may be acute and catastrophic. There is need for better and ef ective flood mitigation system to ensure the safety of people and economy such as flood alert and early warning mechanism. Also the construction of dam on the upstream of river Niger and Benue can go a long way in reducing the incidence of flooding in the study area. An ef ective disaster mitigation program must include aspects of public education, professional training, and multi-discipline collaboration. Programs, which educate the public and promote personal disaster safety, are the backbone to a successful disaster response. In order for the public to be prepared even to a minimal standard, the specific disasters that the community may face must be common knowledge.
