ABSTRACT
This study is a sociolinguistic investigation on the impact of multilingualism on the vitality of Edo language using Benin City as a case study. This study focused on highlighting the nature of impacts the presence of other languages in Benin City has on the Edo indigenous language. These impacts are viewed in terms of language attitude given to the languages in the city and the status of the languages. Data collected for this research was done using the questionnaire and direct observation methods of data collection. In analyzing the language samples collected for this research, the researcher adopts the descriptive theoretical framework. Findings of this research includes that Benin City is a multilingual community and that the nature of impact multilingualism has on the Edo language is that of negativity. This research concludes that other languages in Benin City have been given more communicative functions over the years. The implication of this is that non-Edo indigenes have little or no willingness to learn the language of the land even the Edo indigenes rarely use the language while communicating even with other Edo persons.
